1. iPhone Settings: Turn Off Automatic Downloads

Update your iPhone settings before setting up your iPad.

If you have an iPhone, check your settings to determine if your phone apps will be automatically downloaded to your new ipad; leaving automatic downloads 'on' may significantly slow down the setup of your iPad.   To turn off the automatic download feature:

  1. On  your iPhone, access Settings, then select App Store.
  2. Scroll to the Automatic Downloads section
  3. Turn off the slider next to App Downloads

  • Select eduroam; login with GW UserID (including @gwu.edu) and password

When you will use it: to locate and link to readings; to find the required apps list and instructions.

To do:

  1. On your iPad, open Safari and access this webpage: http://guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/anesthesia
  2. In the upper right of the Safari screen, click on the box with an up arrow: File:Ei-share-apple.svg - Wikimedia Commons.
  3. Select Add to Home Screen; you may also choose Add Bookmark.

4. GW email

  1. From your home screen, go to Settings.
  2. In Settings, tap Mail & Accounts.
  3. Tap Add Account then choose Google.
  4. On the Google-branded login screen, enter your GW UserID formatted as GWUserID@email.gwu.edu then hit Go (no password entered).
  5. On the GW email screen, enter your enter your GW UserID formatted as GWUserID@gwu.edu, then enter your password.
  6. Choose the items you want to sync (Mail plus Contacts, Calendars, Reminders according to your preference) then tap Save.
  7. Press the Home button then access Mail.  After a minute or two you will see your email begin to appear in your Inbox.

5. DynaMed

DynaMed App IconAbout this appDynaMed is a point-of-care information resource which includes drug and disease information. DynaMed contains more topics than epocrates+ and also provides more detail on clinical interventions and the quality of evidence for that information.  DynaMed is provided to you courtesy of Himmelfarb Library.

When you will use it: to find evidence-based information on specific conditions including diagnostic approaches

App Installation

  1. Access DynaMed then click on Sign in followed by Register now and create a personal DynaMed account.
  2. Download app: DynaMed
  3. Open the DynaMed app then select Sign in and provide your personal DynaMed username and password. 

Tips

  • Web: 24/7 mobile-optimized web access from Himmelfarb Library homepage.
  • Phone: download the DynaMed app on your phone and login with your DynaMed username and password for access regardless of WiFi/cellular access.
  • Maintenance: to maintain app access, access DynaMed then click on Sign in and authenticate to your personal DynaMed account at least once every twelve months.

6. Lexidrug

About this app: Lexidrug is a comprehensive clinical drug information app including Lexi-Drugs and Lexi-Interact. Lexidrug is provided to you courtesy of Himmelfarb Library.

When you will use it: to look up specific drugs; to identify possible drug interactions; to identify visually identify drugs.

Note: do not activate a Lexidrug trial as your iTunes account will be charged $29.99/month.  Please follow the below instructions in order to activate Lexidrug at no charge via Himmelfarb Library's subscription.

To do:  

  1. Access Lexidrug and click on the blue button labeled Mobile Access Codes.
  2. Select the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad platform and that you are a new customer; copy the authorization code displayed in red. You can copy directly from your iPad by holding your finger on the code and selecting copy from the pop-up menu.
  3. Create a personal Lexidrug account then login to your Lexidrug account.  
  4. Under Add a Subscription by Code, paste or type the Lexidrug authorization code.  To paste, hold your finger in the desired location and choose Paste from the pop-up menu.
  5. Download app: Lexidrug
  6. Open the Lexidrug app and login with your Lexidrug login/password; Lexidrug content will automatically load to your iPad. 

Tips

  • Web: 24/7 web access from Himmelfarb Library homepage; web access is NOT mobile-optimized so install app on your phone, too (keep reading next tip).
  • Phone: download the Lexidrug app on your phone and login with your Lexidrug username and password.
  • Maintenance: Lexidrug issues a new subscription code each April; watch for the code which is distributed via the resident listserv.

7. BrowZine

Browzine AppAbout this app: BrowZine is a bookshelf app which allows you to select your favorite full-text journals from Himmelfarb Library's online collections to scan issues and read or save articles.  BrowZine is designed to help you keep up with your favorite journals and stay up to date in your field.

When you will use it: This app is designed to help you stay up-to-date on information in your field and can be customized to mirror your specific interests.  

To do:

  1. Signup for a BrowZine account. Note: you will be prompted to verify the account via email.
  2. Download app: BrowZine.
  3. On your iPad, open the BrowZine app and then select Settings and choose George Washington University – Himmelfarb Library.
  4. A login screen will display automatically; login with your GW UserID and password.
  5. Select BrowZine Library and then Titles A-Z.  
  6. Locate Anesthesiology and the Anesthesia & Analgesia; add each of these journals to your Bookshelf.  Note: You will be prompted to login to your Browzine account.
  7. You may also add additional titles of interest to you to your BrowZine Bookshelf.

8. Medical Letter

The Medical Letter AppAbout this app: The Medical Letter publishes critical appraisals of new prescription drugs and comparative reviews of previously approved drugs.

 

To do:

  1. Access The Medical Letter, then click Mobile App and register for mobile access.
  2. Download app: Medical Letter.
  3. Open the Medical Letter app then login with your Medical Letter login and password..
  4. Maintenance: your Medical Letter personal account will remain active for two years; after two years, you will receive an email alerting you to how to renew your access.

9. OneNote

About this app: OneNote is note-taking program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. 

When you will use it: highlight and annotate book chapters which you download in PDF format.

To do:  

  1. Download app: OneNote.
  2. Access OneNote then select login or click on tool wheel and select Login. 
  3. To login, enter your UserID@gwu.edu along with the associated password.
