Terminology

Ableism: Bias or discrimination against disabled people.

Accommodation: A modification or adjustment to a job, task, environment, or the usual way in which something is done that enables a person with a disability to complete the job or task, or enjoy or have access to the environment.

ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act): The ADA is a law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in various aspects of public life, including requirements for employers, state and local governments, public transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and more. 

Disability: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a person with a disability as someone who:

  • has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
  • has a history or record of such an impairment (such as cancer that is in remission), or
  • is perceived by others as having such an impairment (such as a person who has scars from a severe burn).

Neurodivergence: A non-medical term that describes people whose brains develop and/or work differently. People who are not neurodivergent are described as "neurotypical."
