Team Development: Jump Starting Teams

1. Overview

  • Jump starting a team is required when there isn’t enough time to devote to systematic team development
  • Examples of teams that come together quickly for a specific purpose or a short duration include ad hoc/ taskforce teams, temporary teams, and special emergency response teams
  • “Teaming” can be accomplished by following key principles of communication, problem solving, and evaluation

2. Jump Starting Teams

  • Many situations do not have time for the 5 stages of team development. These may include emergencies, trauma, codes, fire, security situations, etc.

  • Jump starting a team uses many of the characteristics of the stages of team development in rapid succession and simultaneously to effect “teaming”.

3. Examples of Teams that Require Jump Starting

  • Taskforce or ad hoc team
    • Team members come together to solve a specific problem with a short deadline
    • Members are committed to the project and the time required
    • The team disbands as soon as the goal is reached
  • Temporary teams
    • Team consists of members who may not regularly work together but have to perform quickly (in an emergency room, surgical suite, some clinics, hospital or other units that utilize temporary personnel)
  • Specific emergency response teams
    • Team forms to manage specific critical situations such as evacuation from a hospital during a natural disaster
    • Team consists of a designated group of healthcare providers who can be assembled quickly to deliver critical care expertise in response to a crisis
