A non-profit organization, was founded in 1976 by members of the National Tribal Chairmen’s Association that called for a national organization to advocate for improved, comprehensive health and social services to American Indian and Alaska Native Elders.

ASA Diversity Programs are developed to provide leadership in the field of aging that is representative of the racial, ethnic and cultural diversity. Special initiatives include; New Ventures in Leadership, Serving Elders of Color, California Multicultural Institute on Aging and Healthcare, and an Online Multicultural Aging Network.
