A Tool to Improve Diagnostic Skills and Decision-Making in the Clinical Setting

There’s more to AccessMedicine than Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and the many other core textbooks in its electronic library. A related online resource, Case Files Collection, provides case-based learning across medical specialties and the basic sciences. Patient cases help learners work through diagnostic considerations and testing/treatment decisions, in preparation for clinical rotations. Case Files Collection also serves as a USMLE study tool, since the exams include case-based questions. Learn below how to navigate the resource below.

Scroll down to Case Files Collection and click on the hyperlink.

If you are not already signed in or, if you don’t yet have an account set up, Click on Sign In or Create a Free Profile as appropriate and follow the instructions.

Once you’re logged in, you can choose from the following categories:

  • Basic Sciences Cases
  • Clinical Rotation Cases
  • Post-Graduate Cases
  • Podcasts/Audio

Cases are organized into Basic Science Cases, Clinical Rotation Cases, and Post-Graduate Cases.

If you click on Clinical Rotation Cases, you’ll see thumbnails representing different specialties.

Find and select a specialty of interest to view the list of its associated cases.

Select a case to study.

You can read or listen to a case, learn more about the condition, and take a case quiz.  Some interactive features in Case Files Collection require users to login with an individual login and password; users can create an individual login/password by clicking in the upper right on My Profile.  Case Files Collection is fully available to GW users at no charge.
