We’ve changed Health Information @ Himmelfarb to increase the visibility of content from other Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) libraries. The new default search scope of "Articles + GW & Consortium Catalog" includes print books and physical items from WRLC libraries including Gelman Library, American University libraries, Georgetown University libraries, and other academic libraries in the DC metro area.
We will evaluate this change in Spring 2024 to decide whether to continue with the new configuration or return to the previous default search behavior. Your feedback will help us make the decision that is most helpful to you, our users.
Health Information @ Himmelfarb is a one search service that provides access to collections and library resources at Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library. It can also search the collections of the other GW libraries and the Washington Research Libraries Consortium (i.e. Georgetown University, American University, Catholic University, etc.).
At GW, all library patrons have been assigned to a home library. If you are in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Milken Institute School of Public Health, or the School of Nursing, your home library is the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library.
What does this mean for you?
Do I need to login to Health Information @ Himmelfarb to get access to all materials?
Why should I login to Health Information @ Himmelfarb?
Can I use the Gelman Library?
Gelman Library/Burns Library is my home library. Can I use the Himmelfarb Library?
I'm a GWSPH undergraduate student - should I use Himmelfarb Library or Gelman Library?
You may use either (or both!) libraries to access online books and journal articles. To see your account information including checkouts and place document delivery and Consortium Loan Service requests, you should login to your home library:
How do I sign in?
You can login to most GW resources (e.g. email, Blackboard, library, GW Box, etc.) with your GW UserID and password. Your UserID will look different depending on if you created your GW account before or after May 22, 2022.
Timetable | UserID | Email Address |
---|---|---|
Accounts created before May 22, 2022 |
An ID you provided when you claimed your account Example: jdoe3 |
Your full email address is your UserID followed by "@gwmail.gwu.edu" (students) or "@email.gwu.edu" (faculty/staff). "UserID@gwu.edu" can be used as a short form of your email address. Example: jdoe3@email.gwu.edu (faculty/staff), jdoe6@gwmail.gwu.edu (student) |
Accounts created after May 22, 2022 |
Same as GWID Example: G12345678 |
Firstname.Lastname, followed by "@gwmail.gwu.edu" (students) or "@email.gwu.edu" (faculty/staff). In cases where multiple individuals share the same first and last name, a number will be added to the last name. "FirstName.Lastname@gwu.edu / FirstName.Lastname#@gwu.edu" can be used as a short form of your email address. Example: Jane.Doe@email.gwu.edu (faculty/staff), John.Doe6@gwmail.gwu.edu (student) |
Regardless of your UserID/Email Address style, there may be minor variations in login depending on the service. Here are some of the most common setups to be aware of:
Service | Login With: |
---|---|
Most resources (using GW single sign-on) |
Your UserID followed by "@gwu.edu" Examples: jdoe3@gwu.edu (legacy accounts), G12345678@gwu.edu (new accounts) |

Most GW resources now require you to enable a secondary method of authentication on your account for security. Current options include an authenticator app, text message, or automated phone call. For more information see the GW IT page on Two-Step Authentication.
