Fall is well underway at Himmelfarb Library. We see users fill our tables and study spaces, and watch the activity in those same spaces subside as users depart for their next class, clinic, or activity. Our librarians are busy juggling their teaching responsibilities while also scheduling research consultations to talk with students about their projects, asking questions to help them frame their research topics, and providing support and advice in identifying resources and constructing search strategies. And, Himmelfarb Library’s staff is engaged with keeping Himmelfarb’s operations, systems, and services operating smoothly and optimally.

Some Himmelfarb users are on-site frequently, while others access Himmelfarb primarily via our online resources and service.  Healthy Living @ Himmelfarb is designed to engage users across our school and program communities.  Some of the ways that we do this are:

  • Monthly Study Break Guides - at the beginning of each month, we publish a list of events occurring to encourage people to take a break and explore Washington, DC.  Most of the events on the list are free or very low-cost, and we try to provide a variety of types of activities, including music, plays, sports, family activities, etc.  Watch The Rotation blog for a new guide at the beginning of each month!
  • Photo contests - Healthy Living @ Himmelfarb sponsors a Fall Colors Photo Contest and a Spring Flowers Photo Contest, which are open to all Himmelfarb affiliates.  With each season, we’re blown away by the talent of the photographers and the beauty of the DC area - and areas beyond DC, as well.  Watch Himmelfarb’s blog and other social media and newsletters for announcements and entry information, and share a bit of the beauty that you find in the changing seasons.
  • Collections - we have small collections of materials and books to support healthy living.  Our books cover topics across wellness, including stress reduction and healthy eating, and there’s always a puzzle in progress in the library where you can spend just a few minutes - or longer.  Beyond books and puzzles, we have hula hoops in the library (really!), yoga balls, and other equipment.
  • Virtual Reality - if you need a more immersive escape, check out one of our Virtual Reality headsets and immerse yourself in a guided meditation or nature trek.  If you’re truly adventurous, use the VR headset to take yourself to Machu Picchu or Antarctica.

As we lean into the learning, research, and clinical responsibilities this season, remember that Himmelfarb is here to serve you.  Take advantage of Healthy Living @ Himmelfarb resources - and keep reaching out to Himmelfarb to support your personal information needs.  We’re here to help you find information, figure out citation management, learn about systematic reviews and more - Ask A Librarian!
