Student Profile - Meet Mir Qureshi, A Public Health Student

Student Profile

Mir Qureshi is completing a Masters degree in Biostatistics at GW’s Milken Institute School of Public Health. Since May of 2023, Mir has worked at the Himmelfarb Library Information Desk checking materials in and out and answering user questions.

What brought you to GW?
I was drawn to GW’s Public Health biostatistics master’s program because of its strong focus on practical application and the opportunity to study in the heart of Washington, D.C. The program's emphasis on using biostatistics for impactful health research aligns perfectly with my passion for using data to improve public health outcomes. More importantly, GW's Master of Public Health (MPH) program in biostatistics is ranked 16th in the United States, reflecting its excellence in the field.

Are there any memorable research or special projects that you’ve participated in while at GW?
One of the most memorable projects I worked on involved analyzing COVID-19 and mortality data to improve data accuracy. I applied advanced machine learning algorithms to enhance data matching and integration, which was incredibly rewarding as it had real-world implications for public health decision-making.

As you reflect on your time at GW, can you share a favorite Himmelfarb memory, or an experience you found to be most useful?
My favorite memory would be collaborating on a late-night project with classmates at Himmelfarb Library. We’d gather around a table with our laptops, books, and endless cups of coffee, exchanging ideas and supporting one another through some of the most challenging parts of our coursework.

You also work at Himmelfarb Library. What is your role?
At the Himmelfarb Library, my role as a student employee at the circulation desk involves assisting patrons with checking out and returning materials, managing library resources, and ensuring that the circulation area runs smoothly. I also help answer general inquiries and support students and faculty in accessing the resources they need, making it a great way to stay connected with the GW community.

What has been the most unexpected, surprising, or challenging experience as a GW student?
The most challenging experience has been balancing a rigorous academic schedule with research commitments and my role at Himmelfarb. It’s taught me resilience and the importance of time management, which I know will be invaluable in my career.

What are your plans after GW?
After GW, I hope to continue working in a data-intensive role, ideally focusing on public health research and statistical consulting. I am particularly interested in working with health organizations to analyze data for evidence-based interventions.

When you are not studying, what are your hobbies, interests, or special things you like to do?
When I’m not studying, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, as well as reading and writing. I also enjoy exploring different neighborhoods in D.C. and discovering new coffee shops or art galleries around the city.
